The Challenge of Organic Green Tea

Numerous studies have reported the health benefits of green tea, yet organically grown tea—considered even better for health—makes up only about 4% of Japan’s total production (certified organic). This is because producing delicious organic tea is extremely challenging: umami—the most prized quality in Japanese green tea—comes largely from nitrogen in fertilizers, which attract pests and make pesticides almost unavoidable.

As a result, it’s often said that truly high-quality green tea and organic farming are difficult to achieve together.

One Farm, One Story

"Organic teas are not as good as non-organic green teas. "
In response to this challenge, there are dedicated farmers in Japan who go to great lengths from preparing the soil to produce flavorful green tea without using any pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Each of these farmers has their own story, overcoming the challenges of organic farming specific to their topography, climate, and soil. Each tea reflects the care, struggle, and passion poured into its creation.

While blending is common in the Japanese tea industry, NAGOMI begins with a different philosophy: offering you pure, trustworthy, and truly exceptional tea in its original, single-origin (one-farm) form, harvested by dedicated farmers.

Bring You Special Teas

Hello, I'm Sho. My great-grandfather founded a tea company in Shizuoka in 1933, and I grew up in a family deeply connected to the tea industry.
For decades, tea’s value in Japan has been defined by its umami flavor, which depends on chemical fertilizers—making pesticides a necessity. Today, an estimated 97% of tea is still produced this way. As I was conducting research in food chemistry, I began to question this reality, especially as I frequently came across academic papers highlighting the health benefits of tea.
At the same time, many in the industry believe that “organic tea doesn’t taste good.” This idea stuck with me—until I met farmers creating delicious organic teas through incredible creativity and effort. Without relying on pesticides, they face serious challenges, yet continue to produce teas full of flavor, care, and story.
That’s why we started NAGOMI—to share the remarkable work with the world and to bring people the tremendous benefits that green tea can offer.
We carefully select organic teas from across Japan, cultivated with respect for nature and tradition, to nurture your well-being and bring harmony to your daily life.
